Why do the cassette units need three feet of clearance above the unit?
Technically speaking, they actually don't. As long as there is enough clearance (About 18 inches) you can install the unit and it will work fine since it draws from the center and exhausts the conditioned air in a 360 degree radial pattern. Three feet is the manufacturer's recommended minimum just in case the unit needs to be serviced. However, having that three feet make installation easier as there will be more room to move around in and makes forming in the copper line sets a breeze!
Is there any maintainence that need to be performed on a regular basis?
The filters will need to be cleaned at least every 30 days. The good news is the units come with a washable, reusable filter that can easily be popped out, rinsed off, dried, and then reinserted. The grill fixture simply hinges downward when the two tabs are disengaged allowing for quick and easy access. Making sure to follow this cleaning schedule will greatly reduce the possibility of dust and grime buildup reaching the internal coils. If buildup is allowed to acculate on the internal components, they will need to be cleaned as well, and this is a job for an HVAC technician that would incur some cost. Fortunately, these are designed to minimize this from occuring and if the normal filter cleaning schedule is followed is rarely an issue.
What BTU range do the cassette style units come in?
Cassettes come in 9,000 BTU to 48,000 BTU sizes, covering everything from small addon rooms up to larger, 2000 sq foot single zone areas. These are ideal for server rooms or other areas where a traditional wall mount type is inappropriate.
